The front cover made me think I was picking up another vampire/creature book. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a Canadian coming of age story written by a 2-time Governor General award winner. Set as World War II wraps up, 13 year old Rachel is excited that her older brother has returned from the war. But things do not return to the way it was, as Rachel is forced to deal with a changed brother, a changing family and changes in herself. The writing was simple but affecting. I can recommend it to adults and young people alike.
