Life is just soooo unfair. A certified schlockmeister like Stephen Spielberg could have done this movie with his usual pile of sentimental treacle and made millions. Poor Annie Fontaine piles on every sentimental trick in her repertoire and all she gets is an invitation to third rate film festivals. So sad.

A gripping and moving story based on a real WWII tragedy , tactfully and masterly rendered by director Anne Fontaine who was brave enough to tackle this taboo and disturbing event : the rape of Catholic nuns by Russian soldiers in a remote convent of Poland. So be brave as well and watch this beautiful movie which you ‘ll never forget.

“FAITH = 24 hours of DOUBT and a minute of HOPE”. Important and relevant (esp. today) film that examines the aftermath of war crimes and human resilience. Stark, wintry, yet suffused with warmth and humanity. Ethical/political/religious dilemmas: what would a small group of pregnant novice nuns do with their first-borns? BRAVAS to director Anne Fontaine, cinematographer Caroline Champetier, female screen writers, editor and costume designer; the SUPERB ensemble of Polish actresses, and Lou de Laâge as the intrepid French Red Cross doctor-in-training (Madeleine Pauliac, whose story this film was based). Anne Fontaine (like her Polish thespians), is not well-known outside Europe; BPL has some of her output: Gemma Bovary, Brit graphic novel about Madame Bovary re-adapted into French; Nathalie, a call-girl (Béart) hired by a woman (Ardant) who suspected her husband (Depardieu) of infidelity (shabbily remade as Chloé by Canada’s Atom Egoyan; remakes of French films are usually crappy); Coco avant Chanel; My Worst Nightmare (Isabelle Huppert); How I Killed my Father (Michel Bouquet), etc. Google Anne Fontaine for her bio+filmography.

This is a very good movie !
The German and Russian troops had taken a convent in Poland before the end of the WWII. After the war, it was found that one of the nuns gave birth to a baby. The newly born was taken away from the convent and left in the place further away, it was cold outside. By doing so, the Mother Superior hoped that the incident would not be spread outside the convent. But then, there were still another six holy sisters in advanced stages of pregnancy, what would the Mother Superior do ? Like she did for the first nun, to throw away the baby so that the nuns (mothers) could not even have the chances to take care of the babies? Or could she find a better way to handle these cases ?
