Makes almost every greatest sports movie list, but is good enough to transcend its genre. Why? For one thing, Slap Shot was written by a woman. That's why we see the struggles of the players' girlfriends--from their points of view. We also see that the team owner is a woman--a wealthy, disinterested woman to whom the players are nothing more than fresh meat for her to unload before the expiration date.

Also of note is the blue collar spirit of the film-- the small Rust Belt cities and their people, as well as art direction that undoubtedly seemed like nbd in 1977 but looks fantastic forty years later.

My favorite line: "I'm trying to listen to the f*****g song!"

The pinnacle of all hockey movies.

Favorite movie of all time hands down!

I have to admit I enjoyed this movie.
Paul Newman is fabulous as the rather dumb jock Hockey Coach, who doesn't quite 'get it' about most things, except hockey and money.
The personalities and antics of the players, wives, girlfriends and fans are delightfully outrageous.
And of course, the Hanson Brothers, you must see.
Watch the commentary with the Hanson Brothers - there are some surprises about them and the movie worth discovering.
